Is relationship counselling for us?

If you both feel that your relationship is not working as well as you might want to and you have tried numerous things to make it work and nothing seems to be making a difference for you then this is perhaps the time when you want to think about relationship counselling. The decision of starting the counselling must be joint for the best outcomes.

What can we expect from relationship?counselling?

After the initial contact we will arrange a suitable date and time for you to attend counselling. In our first session I will complete an assessment of your needs and situation. This is nothing to worry about, this assessment is basically just a conversation between us in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The assessment allows me to understand more about what your relationship problems are and to decide on what we want to focus on in our sessions. This will also indicate if relationship counselling is the best route for you and your partner.

How many sessions do we need?

This is entirely your choice I am led by your decisions, but it’s important to remember that counselling is not a quick fix and sometimes it can take time before we see the desirable difference. I offer short and long term counselling. Short term counselling is perhaps one, two or three sessions on a specific targeted issue. Whereas long term counselling can last from 6 weeks to even a year.

What will we be talking about?

Every session will be different, because this is a talking therapy you will be talking about what feels important at that time to you. Sometimes we will be talking about your relationship problems, other times about your wider family or your past.

What if we won’t manage to resolve our issues?

The crucial thing to remember about the relationship counselling is that this is the time where you can explore deeply your relationship in a supportive environment. Even if at the end you decide to end the relationship by having counselling with your partner you will learn how to end it on a positive and respectful note.

Will you tell us what to do?

As a relationship counsellor I am unable to tell you what you need to do. I believe that you know what decisions you need to make, but sometimes it’s difficult to see that, and therefore my role is to help you to find these answers and to help you understand why you feel the way you do in relation to your partner.
